3 Writing a Paragraph
A paragraph is a collection of sentences on any one topic.
Look at the picture below. It shows the different parts of a paragraph. A paragraph is like
a sandwich.
Topic sentence: An introduction to the topic the
paragraph is going to be about. This is like the first
slice of bread you use to make a sandwich.
Supporting sentences: This is the body of
the paragraph. It contains the sentences that
are written about the topic that the topic
sentence talks about. These are like the vegetables
and the sauce you put inside a sandwich.
Concluding sentence: This is the ending sentence
that recaps what you have written in the topic and the
supporting sentences. This is like the last slice of bread
you use to make a sandwich.
Read this paragraph on trees.
Trees
Trees are beautiful. Some trees are big with thick branches like the neem, peepal and
banyan trees. Some are thin and very tall like the eucalyptus. Some trees are short.
We get fruits from trees like mangoes, oranges and apples. Trees like the gulmohar
and amaltas have beautiful flowers. Some trees provide very good shade for people and
animals. Trees also help in keeping the earth cool. They help in keeping the air clean.
Trees take in carbon dioxide from the air and give out oxygen. Human beings and
animals need fresh air and oxygen to live. Trees help in protecting the soil. They also
stop strong winds. We depend on trees and plants for many things. Trees give us fruits,
medicines, oils, coir, rubber, cotton, gum, and many other things. We get wood from
trees to make houses and furniture. Paper is also made from trees. Forests provide food
and shelter to animals. They provide a nesting place for birds. Our earth looks beautiful
