Read these sentences to find out what Mithun did yesterday. Notice the
highlighted verbs.
Mithun went to school in the morning. He returned home at 2:45 p.m. He
had his lunch. Then, he gave his dog, Captain, a bath. He groomed Captain
and gave it lunch. Then he took it to the park and played with it. Mithun and
his pet enjoyed themselves.
The highlighted words in these sentences tell us that the actions happened in the past.
They are in the simple past tense.
The simple past tense is used to talk about actions that happened at a certain time
in the past.

Singular Plural Note
I sang we sang • Most verbs form their past by
adding d or ed. For example,
you sang you sang work—worked, bake—baked.
he/she/it sang they sang • Verbs that end in y, drop the
y and take ied. For example,
cry—cried, fry—fried.
