4 The Farmer, His Son

                                            and the Donkey

Read the story and answer the questions.

One day, a farmer was going to the market with his son and his donkey. They met some

             people on the way.

‘Why do you walk when you have a donkey to ride on?’ they said. ‘The boy is a child. Let
             him ride it.’

So, the boy rode on the donkey and they moved on.

Soon, they met a woman. ‘How shameful of
you!’ cried the woman, ‘your father is
old. Let him ride. He must be tired.’

So, the boy got down and the father

rode the donkey. They went ahead.

‘Poor boy,’ said the next person they
met, ‘the lazy father is riding and his
             son is walking!’

So, the boy also sat on the donkey.
As they went on, they met some
             travellers.

‘How cruel of them! They will kill the

poor donkey with their weight,’ said the travellers.

The father and the son decided to carry the donkey on their shoulders.

When people saw this, they laughed. The laughter frightened the donkey.

It broke free and galloped away.
