Warm-up
Read this conversation. Underline the adverbs.
Sanya: Ron, why are you walking with crutches? Are you alright?
Ronit: Yesterday, I hurt myself. And because of the pain, I could not sleep properly.
Sanya: How did you get hurt?
Ronit: I was at my grandfather’s house. All of us meet at his place occasionally.
Sanya: So the accident happened there?
Ronit: Yes, we were playing noisily. While running around,
I hit the wall hard.
Sanya: What happened then?
Ronit: My grandfather quickly took me to the doctor’s.
Sanya: That was thoughtful of him! What was the
doctor’s advice?
Ronit: The doctor put a plaster lightly over the wound. She has asked me to walk
around carefully. She also gave me these crutches to help me walk till I get better.
Sanya: That’s good. Be careful.
Ronit: Sure, Sanya. Thanks.
Adverbs are words that tell us more about verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.
For example,
y She walks fast.
y Shelly sat quietly. (qualifying the verbs walk and sat)
y Sania is very hungry.
y Aslam is rather naughty. (qualifying the adjectives hungry and naughty)
