Uses
We use the simple past tense to express
1. actions done at some time in the past. For example,
y I wrote to her last week.
y They called the plumber to repair the taps.
2. some actions that were done in the past as a matter of habit. For example,
y We often went away for the weekend.
y They always invited us over for festivals.
Structure
The structure of the simple past tense is given.
Ø For declarative sentences
Subject Verb
I ran.
You ran.
He/She/It ran.
We ran.
You ran.
They ran.
Ø For negative sentences
Subject Helping verb + not Verb
I did not/didn’t sing.
You did not/didn’t sing.
He/She/It did not/didn’t sing.
We did not/didn’t sing.
You did not/didn’t sing.
They did not/didn’t sing.
