You have learnt that adjectives can be used to compare people and things. Adjectives
are of three degrees—positive, comparative and superlative. Let’s revise the rules
of forming the comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives.
-er -est
For most single-syllable tall taller tallest
adjectives, add -er and -est
small smaller smallest
-r -st
For adjectives ending in e, large larger largest
add -r and -st
brave braver bravest
For adjectives ending -er -est
with a vowel followed by
a consonant, double the hot hotter hottest
consonant and add -er and big bigger biggest
-est
-er -est
For adjectives ending with
a vowel and -y, add -er and gay gayer gayest
-est grey greyer greyest
-ier -iest
For two-syllable adjectives
ending in -y, remove the -y happy happier happiest
and add -ier and -iest lovely lovelier loveliest
For adjectives that end in more+ most+
-ed, -ing, -ful, -ous, -er, famous more famous most famous
-ive, add more and most beautiful more beautiful most beautiful
