When we want to convey the actual words of the speaker, we put the spoken words of
the speaker in inverted commas (‘…’). For example,
• Unni asks, ‘What is happening, Acha?’
• Janaki Miss replies, ‘Electricity comes through wires from the village power station.’
The punctuation marks ‘...’ set apart the words of the speaker from the rest of
the sentence.
You should remember:
• There is a comma before the speech mark and the words spoken. For example,
♦ Unni said, ‘Our house finally has electricity!’
• The first word of the words being spoken begins with a capital letter. For example,
♦ Unni said, ‘Our house finally has electricity!’
• There should be a full stop, exclamation mark or a question mark at the end of the
sentence. All these will be covered with inverted commas. For example,
♦ Unni said, ‘Our house finally has electricity!’
Which of these sentences have the correct punctuation marks?

2. Rima said, I’m going to the fair tomorrow.
