A rhyme scheme is the pattern formed by the rhyming words at the end of each
line of a stanza or a poem.
Rhyme scheme is described using the letters of the alphabet. Let's learn to find
rhyme scheme using the stanza given below.
a. We start by labelling the first line with the letter a.
b. Then, we read the next line. If the final word of that line rhymes with the first
line, we label it a, or else, we label it b. Like in this following stanza, spent does
not rhyme with wide.
c. The last word of Line 3 rhymes with the last word of Line 2. So we label it b.
d. And the last word of Line 4 rhymes with the last word of Line 1. So we label it a.
When I consider how my light is spent a
Ere half my days in this dark world and wide, b
And that one talent which is death to hide b
Lodg’d with me useless, though my soul more bent a
So, we say that the stanza has the rhyme scheme, abba.
2. What is the rhyme scheme of the poem ‘Grandma Doesn’t Care’?
