Time to study language
You have learnt that a sentence has two parts—a subject and a predicate.
The subject is the part of the sentence that tells us who performs an action or what the
sentence is about. The subject usually comes before the verb.
The rest of the sentence is called the predicate. The predicate tells us what the subject
does or what the subject is. The predicate contains the verb.
For example,
• I hid some unniappams in the kitchen.
(subject) (predicate—tells you what the subject did)
• The unniappams are a tasty snack of Kerala.
(subject) (predicate—tells you what the subject is)
• You caught me.
(subject) (predicate—tells you what the subject did)
• Those unniappams were irresistible.
(subject) (predicate—tells you what the subject is)
Identify the highlighted parts as subject, predicate or none.

2. The lake looks beautiful today.

3. The squirrel ran up the tree.
