Time to study language
You have learnt that the words and, but, or and because are conjunctions. They help
us to join sentences. For example,
• We sat silent a minute and looked at the nice, hot porridge.
• We never drank tea or coffee.
• We had porridge for breakfast because we were brought up like English children.
• I wanted to eat the porridge but I had to share it with the poor children.
There are a few more conjunctions. They help us to join sentences too. Let us now learn
about them.
• Six children are huddled into one bed for they have no fire. (because)
• I want to tell you about a New Year’s breakfast which I had when I was a little girl.
(used to ask or talk about one)
• As we came down to breakfast that morning, we found Father alone in the
dining-room. (in the way that)
• Don’t begin till you hear what I have to say. (up to the point in time)
• When we come back, we’ll get something to eat. (at that time)
• It was a very happy breakfast, though we didn’t get any of it. (in spite of the fact)
Complete the sentences with appropriate conjunctions.
