Time to learn new words
You have learnt that compound words are usually formed of two words. These are some
compound words from the story.
• hill station • old-fashioned • cowshed • police station
Based on the above examples, we can divide compound words into three kinds.
• A closed compound word is formed of two words that do not have any space between
them. For example, cowshed, extraordinary.
• An open compound word is formed of two words that have a space between them.
When they are read together, they form a new meaning. For example, hill station,
real estate.
• A hyphenated compound word is formed of two or more words that are joined by a
hyphen. For example, old-fashioned, father-in-law.
Use these words to make as many compound words of the three kinds.
