While reading the poem, were you able to form pictures of the different situations that the
child speaks about—the elephant with shining tusks attacking the child, the three-headed
ugly giant with a red hot fiery breath and the shimmery and white ghosts chasing him around
his bed?
This is because the poet has used the technique of imagery.
Imagery is a figure of speech in which poets and authors use words that create strong mental
pictures and sensations. Without it, a poem’s ideas seem less appealing to the reader.
