Father: Go out and sell these matches.

Little Match Girl: But Father, it is too cold.

Father: Do you see your mother and

brothers? They are hungry. If you don’t sell
the matches, we will all sleep hungry. Do
          you understand?

Little Match Girl: Yes, Father. I
          understand.

Father: Remember that the money you
bring tonight, will get us our supper. So
don’t come back without any money. Do

          you hear me?

          Little Match Girl: Yes, Father.

Narrator: In the cold and gloom, the
poor Little Match Girl walks out into the
streets. She is hungry. She is cold. She is
wearing a large pair of very big slippers, way too big for her, for they

          belonged to her mother.
                                                  Scene II: In the street

Little Match Girl: I am so cold. These large slippers don’t protect my feet. I wish I had a
pair of shoes to keep my feet warm.

Narrator: Suddenly, two carriages rattle past her. In panic, she runs across to save herself
and loses one of her slippers. She tries to find her lost slipper, but she can’t find it. So,
shivering with cold and hunger, the Little Match Girl walks along the street with bare

head and naked feet which were quite red and blue with the cold. A man walks past her.

Little Match Girl (holding out a packet of matches): Sir, please buy some matches from me.
          I have no money.

Narrator: The man goes away without paying any attention. There is a lady and her
daughter coming towards the Little Match Girl.

Daughter: O Mother! The doll is so pretty. I love it very much.

Mother: I am glad that you like it. Now, come on. Let’s hurry home. It’s too cold outside.

Narrator: Suddenly, the Little Match Girl comes before the woman and her daughter.

Little Match Girl (with a packet of matches in her hands): Please, Lady. Buy some matches
          from me.
