Sometimes in poems, plays and songs, the speaker addresses an absent person or a non-human
object or idea, it is called apostrophe. An apostrophe is used to direct the reader’s attention to
something other than the narrator. An apostrophe often begins with an exclamation. This may be
a sound, like O!
1. Can you find an example of apostrophe in the poem? Whom is the poet addressing?
When words or images are used to represent an abstract idea, it is called symbolism.
For example, ‘a caged bird’ symbolizes a child who is forced to go to school when he should be
playing and enjoying the pleasant summer morning.
2. According to you, what could these words represent:
a. summer
b. a cruel eye outworn
c. tender plants
Alliteration is the repetition of beginning consonant words in neighbouring words.
For example,
And blossoms blown away;
