Time to study language
A non-finite verb is a form of a verb that does not show tense and number in an independent
clause or a sentence.
In English, the non-finite verb forms are infinitives, participles and gerunds. Let us learn more
about them.
• The infinitive is made up of to and the base form of a verb. For example,
♦ I went to the mall to meet my friend.
♦ She suddenly got up and rushed to post the letter.
• The participle has two forms—present participle and past participle. They are usually
used as adjectives. For example,
♦ Can you fix this broken vase?
♦ Do not wake up the sleeping baby.
• The gerund is the ing form of a verb that is used as a noun. For example,
♦ Swimming is a good exercise.
♦ Acting is fun.
