Let’s study grammar
Read these sentences from the text.
When she arrived at the airport in London, it was not quite as she had imagined
at all.
Everybody was looking at her as if she was an alien with a big head and three eyes.
In each of the above sentences, the underlined parts have a subject and a predicate
and can stand independently. They convey complete meaning.
However, the parts that are double underlined also have a subject and a predicate
but cannot stand independently and do not convey complete meaning.
A clause that can stand by itself and convey complete sense is called an independent
clause.
A clause that cannot stand by itself and do not convey complete sense is called a
dependent clause. A dependent clause depends on the independent clause for its
complete meaning.
