Let us now understand the use of capital letters and the different marks of
punctuation.
We use capital letters
1. to begin a sentence. For example,
y The dog ran after the cat.
2. for proper nouns. For example,
y The dog is called Spot.
y We are meeting Shilpi on Sunday.
y Uncle Tom took us to Disneyland.
y The festival of Diwali falls in the month of October this year.
3. for the pronoun I. For example,
y Sneha and I went to the park.
We use a full stop
1. at the end of a statement or a command. Note
For example, We do not use a full stop
y I am going to school. after Mr, Mrs and Dr, or after
short forms of countries and
2. after short forms of words. television stations such as the
y I will meet you between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. UK, the USA, CNN and ESPN.
We use a question mark
1. at the end of a question. For example,
y Do you know Tom?
We use an exclamation mark
1. at the end of a sentence that expresses some strong feeling. For example,
y What a pretty girl!
Full stops, question marks and exclamation marks come at the end of a sentence,
so they are also known as end punctuation marks.
