              Uses of Simple Past Tense


              We use the simple past tense to

              1.  express that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. For example,

                      y Yesterday, the teacher sent a note to Rakesh’s parents.

                      y We went for a picnic last week.

              2.  express a duration in the past. For example,


                      y He lived in America for eight years.

                      y She studied French for three years.

              3.  talk about a series of actions in the past. For example,

                      y I got up at 6 a.m., brushed my teeth and prepared breakfast.

                      y We packed and went for a picnic.
