In direct speech, the exact words of the speaker are quoted.
In indirect speech, the words of the speaker are reported with necessary changes in
tense, time expressions and pronouns.
Rules for Indirect Speech
1. The words of the speaker are not enclosed within quotation marks. For example,
y Ben said, ‘I am happy.’ (direct speech)
Ben said that he was happy. (indirect speech)
2. The conjunction that is usually used between reporting verb and reported speech in
indirect speech. For example,
y Rahman said, ‘I love music.’
Rahman said that he loved music.
3. The pronouns and the possessive adjectives also change according to subject or object
of the sentence in direct speech. For example,
y She said, ‘I don’t like tea.’
She said that she didn’t like tea.
