Structure
♦ Affirmative sentences
For affirmative sentences, we use the past participle form of the verb.
subject auxiliary verb past participle rest of the sentence
• He had earned a lot of money.
• They had decided to go to Japan.
♦ Negative sentences
For negative sentences, we have the following structure.
subject auxiliary verb not past participle rest of the sentence
subject had not past participle rest of the sentence
• She had not cooked any food for us.
• They had not finished their homework.
♦ Interrogative sentences
For interrogative sentences, we have the following structure.
auxiliary verb subject past participle rest of the sentence
had subject past participle rest of the sentence
• Had you completed the task?
• Had she appeared for an exam?
