Placement of Prepositions

             1. Prepositions must always be followed by a noun or a pronoun. That noun or
pronoun is called the object of a preposition. For example,

y The dog is walking behind its master.
y The ants live under the rocks.
y She tied her hair with a blue ribbon.
             2. Sometimes prepositions come at the end of a sentence, after its object.
                 For example,

y I turned the TV on.
y How much did you sell it for?
y Do you know who she is talking to?
             3. Sometimes, prepositions come at the end of a sentence when its object is used as
the subject of the sentence. For example,

y Santorini is the city I would like to live in.
             4. A prepositional phrase can be placed at the beginning or the end of a sentence.
                 For example,

y In the evening, we usually take a walk by the beach.
y We usually take a walk by the beach in the evening.

             Preposition or Adverb

Words can sometimes act as prepositions or as adverbs. A preposition requires an
object. An adverb qualifies a verb. For example,

y The child colours outside the lines. (preposition)
             y Let’s go outside. (adverb)
y The rain came down heavily. (adverb)
y We ran down the stairs. (preposition)
