A. Change these sentences from direct to indirect speech.
1. He said, ‘I like this house.’
2. Sagar said, ‘It rained last night.’
3. ‘I met him five years ago,’ said Tara.
4. My mother said to me, ‘I am not feeling well today.’
5. Rajesh said, ‘I don’t like soft drinks because they are bad for health.’
6. The doctor said, ‘I can’t attend to this patient because this is a case of an
accident and I need to call the police.’
7. Divya said, ‘Thank you, Papa, for the books that you gave me on my birthday.’
8. The old man said, ‘It is hunger that makes our food seem tasty, whether we are
young or old, rich or poor.’
Reporting Statements
♦ The reporting verb said may be retained as said or it may be changed to told. For
example,
y Sneha said, ‘I want to buy a mobile phone.’
Sneha said that she wanted to buy a mobile phone.
y Ram said to Shyam, ‘I can help you in Physics.’
Ram told Shyam that he could help him in Physics.
Reporting Yes/No Questions
♦ While reporting yes/no questions, we use if or whether. For example,
y She said to me, ‘Are you coming?’
She asked me if I was coming.
Reporting wh Questions
When we report wh questions, the indirect speech is introduced by verbs such as
asked, enquired, etc. For example,
y Father said to me, ‘Where are you going?’
Father asked me where I was going.
