Comparison: Past Simple and Past Perfect

While both the past simple and past perfect tenses are used to talk about things that
happened in the past, the past perfect is used to describe an action that happened
before another action in the past. The action that happened after the action described
in past perfect, is expressed in past simple. For example,
• Anuradha went out to the market. (simple past)
• Anuradha had gone out to the market, but came back soon as it started raining.
(past perfect)

H. Fill in the blanks with the past simple or the past perfect form of the verbs
given in the brackets.

When we (arrive) at the station, the train
(leave). We (look) everywhere for Sakshi but we

not (locate) her when we heard someone cry, ‘Papa’. We
