The future tenses are classified as simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous
tenses. Let us learn about them.
Simple Future Tense
Uses
We use the simple future tense to
1. predict a future event. For example,
y It will rain tomorrow.
y I will visit the Big Ben when I visit London next month.
2. talk about something that is not so certain to happen. For example,
y I think he will call me later.
y I believe it will be a nice meeting.
3. make promises or express willingness to do something in the future.
For example,
y I will help you.
y He will fix the car tomorrow.
4. make a sudden decision. For example,
y I will make some tea.
y I will pay for the tickets.
5. state a fact. For example,
y Dogs will chase cats.
y The new highway will improve the traffic flow.
6. state a possible condition and its probable result. For example,
y If I have time, I will watch a film.
y If you drop the glass, it will break.
7. express hopes, fears, threats, promises, warnings, predictions, requests, comments
especially with ‘hope’/‘believe’/‘I’m sure’/‘I’m afraid’/‘probably’. For example,
y I hope he will like his birthday present.
8. ‘Shall’ is used with ‘I’ or ‘we’ to express questions, suggestions, offers and when
asking for advice. For example,
y Shall we leave now?
y Shall I bring in the cake?
