2 Personification
Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing—an idea or an animal—is
given human attributes.
For example,
• The leaves waved in the wind.
• The ocean heaved a sigh.
• The sun smiled at us.
A. Read these lines extracted from two poems that use personification. Identify
the words/phrases/lines that display personification.
Have you got a brook in your little heart,
Where bashful flowers blow,
And blushing birds go down to drink,
And shadows tremble so?
B. Based on the examples you just read, write at least six to eight lines using
the technique of personification.
