13                 Kinds of Phrases









                                                                                      Warm-up


                 You have learnt about phrases. A phrase is a group of words that makes some

                 sense, but not complete sense. It may contain a non-finite verb like an infinitive,
                 gerund or participle, but it cannot contain a finite verb.

                 Now, underline the phrases in these sentences.

                    1.  We went into the room.

                    2.  The girl in the red dress is my sister.

                    3.  She held the baby with great care.

                    4.  The vegetable seller shouts in a loud voice.

                    5.  The aeroplane took off at 10 a.m.

                    6.  She wanted to speak to the Principal.

                    7.  We grow potatoes in our garden.

                    8.  She hopes to win the first prize.

                    9.  Look for your shoes under the bed.

                  10.  The patient was kept in isolation for fifteen days.






                        A phrase is a group of words with some meaning but not complete meaning. A
                        phrase does not have a subject or a verb.



              There are different kinds of phrases—noun phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase,
              verb phrase and prepositional phrase.
