For example,

Now, read these sentences.

• The Tin Woodman was groaning loudly.
The highlighted verbs tell us that the actions were happening at a particular time
in the past. These sentences are in the past continuous tense.
For example,
• They were walking through the forest.
• She was swimming in the river.
