Time to enjoy
The poet compares the train to ‘a bossing giant’. This helps us to create the image of a
huge train that is screaming, fretting, fuming as it moves through the countryside and
dominates over the landscape, humans and animals. A comparison where one thing is
compared with another without the use of like or as is known as metaphor.
Let us now try to understand the difference between similes and metaphors.
Simile Metaphor
A comparison between two different A comparison between two different
things using as and like things without using as and like
Makes clear comparisons Does not make clear comparisons,
meaning has to be understood
For example, For example,
• The train is like a bossing giant. • The train is a bossing giant.
• Ramya was as pretty as an angel. • She is an angel.
Now, write metaphors or similes using each pair of words.
1. powerful, train
2. stars, sparkling diamonds
3. swim, dolphin
4. delicate, snowflake
The poet uses the word ‘jook jook’ to describe the sound that a train makes.
Now, be imaginative as you can and write the sound that each of these
things make.
1. A pressure cooker going off
2. Water balloons bursting when they are thrown on the ground
3. The ceiling fan as it goes round and round
4. A pile of books falling to the ground
