Time to study language
You have learnt that the subject is the person or thing that performs the action. You have
also learnt that an object is a person or thing that receives the action of the subject. Most
sentences follow the subject−verb−object (S−V−O) pattern. For example,
• We heard the parrot talking.
S V O
• The Pret frightened the pony.
S V O
• The Pret hid Grandmother’s spectacles.
S V O
Verbs that have objects are called transitive verbs. These verbs usually require an object to
complete their meaning.
However, some sentences do not have objects. For example,
• The peepul tree was cut down.
• Uncle Ken was the next to suffer.
• He stared balefully.
Verbs that do not have objects are called intransitive verbs. These verbs usually do not
require an object to complete their meaning.
