Time to learn new words
A root word is the basic word to which prefixes or suffixes can be added. A root word can
stand alone, whereas prefixes and suffixes cannot stand alone. For example,
• multi + national = multinational
• semi + circle = semicircle
• uni + form = uniform
• joy + ful = hopeful
• illuminate + ion = illumination
• excite + ment = excitement
Some root words can take both prefixes and suffixes. For example,
• un + ethic + al = unethical
• mis + inform + ation = misinformation
• uni + form + ity = uniformity
• dis + appear + ance = disappearance
• ir + regular + ly = irregularly
• un + comfort + able = uncomfortable
