Compound words are of three types:

          • Open compound words are those that are spelled as two words. For example,

               • full moon • dining room • curtain rail

               • tea cup • seat belt

          • Closed compound words are those that are written as a single word. For example,

                • blackboard • snowman • railway

                • southeast • windfall

          • Hyphenated compound words are those that use hyphens between words. For example,

                • long-handled • far-reaching • runner-up
                • self-service • toss-up

Read the passage. Identify the compound words in this passage and write their types in
          your notebook.

It was a full moon night. The thieves slowly crept into the house. They tried to open the
storeroom but the key did not seem to fit the keyhole. Suddenly there was a shrilling sound

behind them. They turned backwards, only to find nobody there. Were they imagining
something or was God playing some mind games with them? It was a fact well known to them
that in the long term, thieves are inevitably caught even though they make well-thought-out
plans. Yet they kept on advancing towards the dining room for a close-up. After reaching the
bedroom they tried to listen carefully for any other sound and relaxed due to the silence.
