Compound words are of three types:
• Open compound words are those that are spelled as two words. For example,
• full moon • dining room • curtain rail
• tea cup • seat belt
• Closed compound words are those that are written as a single word. For example,
• blackboard • snowman • railway
• southeast • windfall
• Hyphenated compound words are those that use hyphens between words. For example,
• long-handled • far-reaching • runner-up
• self-service • toss-up
Read the passage. Identify the compound words in this passage and write their types in
your notebook.
It was a full moon night. The thieves slowly crept into the house. They tried to open the
storeroom but the key did not seem to fit the keyhole. Suddenly there was a shrilling sound
behind them. They turned backwards, only to find nobody there. Were they imagining
something or was God playing some mind games with them? It was a fact well known to them
that in the long term, thieves are inevitably caught even though they make well-thought-out
plans. Yet they kept on advancing towards the dining room for a close-up. After reaching the
bedroom they tried to listen carefully for any other sound and relaxed due to the silence.
