Time to listen
Tom cleverly found a way to complete his punishment without doing any work by
himself. Listen to another story where Birbal cleverly helps a man in need and mark
these sentences as True or False.*
1. A man sold his well to a farmer.
2. The man allowed the farmer to draw only five litres of water.
3. The farmer went to the emperor to seek justice.
4. The emperor handed over the case to Birbal.
5. Birbal asked the farmer to stop drawing water from the well.
6. The man agreed to pay rent to the farmer for using his well.
Time to speak
Sometimes, when we meet new people, like in school, playground, shop, we make a light
conversation to fill the awkward silence. Such talk is called small talk. While making small talk,
we share unimportant information, learn more about the other person or talk about the weather.
Two conversations have got mixed up here. One pair is talking about the weather and
the other is talking about waiting at the bus stop. Get into pairs and sort them out.
Then, practise the conversation.
• Yeah. It’s warm and sunny. • No, it isn’t a regular thing.
• What’s the weather forecast? • Bus route no 349 will take you there.
• They say it will be blue skies all week. • Yes, it is.
• So, is it late today? • No, I don’t think so.
• Probably, then there must be traffic. • Is it always late?
• What a beautiful day!
• Well, we haven’t got any rain this month, have we?
• I am not sure. It was supposed to be here ten minutes ago.
• Do you think it will rain next week?
• The forecast says it will be cloudy but no rains.
• Excuse me. Could you tell me which bus goes to Connaught Place?
• At what time will the bus arrive?
