          Read these sentences.

          • ‘There’s something wrong, sir,’ said John.

          • John told the master that there was something wrong.

The first sentence tells us exactly what the young man said, in his own words. Such a sentence is
said to be in direct speech.

The second sentence tells us what John told the master, but in the words reported by someone.
Such a sentence is said to be in indirect speech.

When we change a direct speech statement into the indirect one, we need to keep the following
          points in mind:

          • The inverted commas of direct speech are removed in indirect speech. The comma after the
reporting verb is removed in indirect speech. For example,

♦ ‘I wish we were well out of this wood,’ said my master. (direct speech)
♦ His master said that he wished they were out of that wood. (indirect speech)

          • The conjunction that is usually used between reporting verb and reported speech in indirect
               speech. For example,
♦ ‘I wish we were well out of this wood,’ said my master. (direct speech)

♦ His master said that he wished they were out of that wood. (indirect speech)

          • The pronouns and the possessive adjectives also change according to subject or object of the
sentence in direct speech. For example,

                                                                                                               119
