Time to learn new words
Compound words are words that are formed by connecting two or more words together to
create a new meaning. There are three types of compound words, determined by how the words
are separated.
Open compound words: spaces between the words. For example,
• Ruma’s stomach aches were well known.
• Ruma had cheese sandwich for breakfast.
Closed compound words: no spaces between the words. For example,
• Ruma was mercilessly teased by her classmates.
• Ruma made mistakes while copying the sums from the blackboard.
Hyphenated compound words: hyphens between the words. For example,
• She had gone dressed as a teacher, wearing a sari, pepper-grey hair done up tightly in a bun.
• Have you heard of a four-eyed doll?
• Ruma tried to look at her with wide-eyed innocence.
