The em dash (—) is similar to commas, colon and parentheses. The em dash is used to show a
break in the sentence. For example,
• Anita, as you can see, is a very special child—a child with special needs.
The en dash (–) is wider than a hyphen but narrower than the em dash. The en dash is used to
show a span or range of numbers, dates or time. For example,
• 40–50 people • 1870–1916
The hyphen (-) is used to form compound nouns or compound adjectives, with compound
numbers and some prefixes. For example,
• eight-year-old
