Time to study language
Read these sentences from the story. Each of these sentences has two clauses.
• When I was trying to explain to Mary, I felt helpless.
• I had found the old question papers that I had been looking for.
• I am confident that he will do very well in his final examination.
Here, the clauses that are underlined convey complete thought. The clauses that are double
underlined do not convey complete sense. They depend on the other clauses to convey
complete sense.
A clause that conveys a complete thought is called the independent clause. It is also called the
main clause.
A clause that conveys an incomplete thought is called the dependent clause. It is also called the
subordinate clause.
A. Match the main clause with suitable subordinate clauses.
