Now, read these sentences.
• My parents were very happy as they have never been to school.
• I want to talk to you about Chuskit who does not go to school.
• She cannot reach school because the path is too rough.
Each of these sentences has two clauses. The underlined clause conveys complete sense and
can stand on its own. It is called the main clause. The double underlined clause cannot stand
on its own. It depends on the main clause to complete its meaning. Such a clause is called the
dependent clause.
Each of the above sentences have a main clause and a dependent clause that are joined by a
subordinating conjunction. Such sentences are called complex sentences.
So, we can say that according to structure, sentences are of three kinds.
