Let’s read the following statement taken from the story.
Old man: I have enough hidden treasure below my hut.
The old man says that he has enough hidden treasure below his hut.
The old man said that he had enough hidden treasure below his hut.
The old man tells the king that he has enough hidden treasure below his hut.
The old man told the king that he had enough hidden treasure below his hut.
As you can see says and tells are the reporting verbs in the present tense whereas
said and told are the reporting verbs in the past tense.
Read the following conversation between Nooni and her friend and report the
dialogue by completing the paragraph that follows. An example has been done for you.
Nooni: When did you get back from your vacations?
Chiranjeevi: I got back two days ago.
Nooni: Did you ask your grandmother about Somanahalli yesterday?
Chiranjeevi: I forgot. What did you want to know?
Nooni: I just wanted to match a story I heard last week.
Chiranjeevi: Strange. Why didn’t you tell me? I would have found out on my own.
Nooni: Well, I’ll tell you the details in the recess today.
Chiranjeevi: Are you going to make me go through two periods in suspense?
Nooni: Relax! It’ll be worth it.
