Let’s learn to listen

Ali and Rani discuss the story, ‘Bombay to Bangalore’, from Sudha Murthy’s collection
of stories ‘The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk’.

Listen to their discussion and, mark the statements given below as True or False.*

             1. Rani says that ‘Bombay to Banaras’ was her favourite story from the collection.

             2. Chitra, the girl in the story, becomes an accomplished woman as she grows old.
             3. The narrator found Chitra hiding under a bench at the platform.

             4. Chitra’s stepmother was unkind and abusive towards her.

             5. Ali thinks that Chitra wouldn’t have succeeded had she not met her
                  grandmother.

             6. Rani feels that Chitra’s story teaches us that some problems in life are
                  impossible to deal with.

             7. The students learn that the moral of the story is the value and importance
                  of kindness.

                           Let’s learn to write

Nooni wrote an article for her school magazine after she got back to the city from
             Somanahalli. Read her article.
                                                     Lesson from History

                                                       By Nooni, VII-C

Have you ever listened to stories of your grandparents’ era? There is always a lesson
in what we hear them say.

Not only does history tell us about our past but teaches us lessons we can follow
in the present. What is more, it helps us connect with the roots of our culture and
tradition and helps us develop an understanding of who we truly are.

I recently learnt about the lost stepwell of ancient Somanahalli from my
grandfather. Even though most people would argue that it’s just another tale, I
choose to view it as a learning experience. It taught me the importance of respect—
for one’s elders, the bounties of nature and rules.

As far as I’m concerned, I choose to believe that history does repeat itself and it’s
only the wise who are ready with the lessons learnt from the past.
