Read these sentences from the text. Notice the highlighted words.
Ramu serves tea and samosas. Mr Bhushan picks up the phone.
Tea and samosas are served by Ramu. The phone is picked up by Mr Bhushan.
A sentence is said to be in the active voice when the subject of the sentence is
performing the action.
A sentence is said to be in the passive voice when an action is performed on the
subject of the sentence by someone or something.
Let’s now understand the changes that happen while changing sentences in the
active voice to passive voice in the different tenses.
Tense Active Passive
Simple Present I make a sandwich. A sandwich is made (by me).
Present Continuous I’m making a sandwich. A sandwich is being made (by me).
Simple Past I made a sandwich. A sandwich was made (by me).
Past Continuous I was making a sandwich. A sandwich was being made (by me).
Present Perfect I have made a sandwich. A sandwich has been made (by me).
Past Perfect I had made a sandwich. A sandwich had been made (by me).
Modal 1 I must make a sandwich A sandwich must be made (by me).
Modal 2 I should have made a A sandwich should have been made
sandwich. (by me).
You are Mr Rehman. You read Rakesh’s recipe for making veg sandwiches, given
below.
Take 2 slices of either white or brown bread.
Collect 1 tomato, ½ a cucumber and 1 cheese slice.
Cut the tomato and cucumber into thin but long pieces.
Apply some butter on the insides of the slices.
Put the vegetable pieces into the buttered part of the bread.
Insert the cheese slice along with the vegetables.
Sprinkle some salt and pepper to taste.
Close the sandwich.
