6 Writing a Story

Read the points given below. These points make up the outline of the story
                     you will later read.

King Akbar—draws a line—asks everybody to shorten it without
                         touching it—promises reward—everyone puzzled—Birbal—draws
a longer line next to it—shortens the King’s line without touching it

One day, the great king Akbar drew a line on the floor with a chalk. He then
commanded everyone present to make the line shorter without erasing any part of it.
He promised a handsome reward for the winner.

One after another the courtiers tried to solve the puzzle, but no one could make any
sense of it. Soon, it was Birbal’s turn. He came forward drew a longer line next to the
first one. Thus, Birbal made the line drawn by Akbar shorter without even touching
it. Akbar and his courtiers were once again amazed at Birbal’s unmatched wit.

Now write stories from the points given below.

             1. The king decides to make fun of the clever Tenali Rama—speaks about his dream—
he and Tenali Rama came across two pits—one filled with honey and the other filled
with dirty water—king jumped into the one filled with honey—Tenali Rama tumbled
into the dirty pit—the courtiers laugh at Tenali Rama—next day, Tenali Rama
arrives at court—he has a very similar dream—says both the king and he manage
to escape the pits—couldn’t go back home in that sorry state—they came up with
an idea—Tenali licked off the honey from the king’s body—the king too cleaned off
Tenali Rama—everyone, including the king, keep quiet.
             2. A hungry jackal—chased by dogs—enters dyer’s home—falls into a vat of blue dye—
stained blue from head to toe—back in the forest—nobody recognises him—says he
is the king of animals chosen by the gods—all animals feel scared—lives like a king—
one day, a herd of jackals pass by—they howl aloud—the blue jackal also howls
aloud—the animals turn him out of the forest
