Let us understand the use of coordinating conjunctions.

             ♦   For (explains why)

                 y   Can you please carry this bag, for I already have two other bags in my hands.
                 y   I need to buy some winter clothes, for it will be winter soon.
             ♦   And (meaning in addition to)
                 y   They came and helped me.
                 y   We reached the station and caught the train.
                 y   Start the work and finish it soon.
             ♦   But (shows contrast)

                 y   You can go there, but you cannot meet him.

                 y   We had to walk five kilometres to reach the temple, but we were happy.
                 y   I’m sorry, but I cannot help you.
             ♦   Or (shows choice, alternative or advice)
                 y   Work hard or you’ll fail the exam. (advice)
                 y   You can opt for science or commerce. (alternative)
                 y   She may wait or go home. (option)
                 y   He should either join this company or start his own business. (alternative)

             ♦   Nor (means and not)

                 y   I am not fond of football nor cricket.
                 y   I cannot meet you now nor later.
             ♦   Yet (means despite something)
                 y   He is poor, yet honest.
                 y   She earns a lot, yet she doesn’t seem to be happy.
             ♦   So (gives reason)

                 y   He was hungry, so he ate up all the cake.
                 y   The programme was cancelled, so I spent the day at home.

             A.  Join each pair of sentences using a suitable coordinating conjunction.


                   1.  Hurry up. You’ll miss the train.

                   2.  He is learned. He is experienced.

                   3.  I like milk. I like fruit juice more.

                   4.  I woke up late. I forgot to set my alarm.

                   5.  I stayed up late last night. I am tired today.

                   6.  He has got enough pizza. He’ll not share it.
