2 Subject and Predicate










                                                                                          Warm-up


                     Supply suitable subjects to these predicates.

                       1.                                  like soccer and cricket.

                       2.                                  were talking in the corridor.


                       3.                                  eat your food with a spoon or a fork.
                       4.                                  likes soccer.


                       5.                                  rides her bicycle to school.
                       6.                                  addresses the students tomorrow.


                       7.                                  are watching television.

                       8.                                  play in the field.

                       9.                                  needs soil, water and sunlight to grow.

                      10.                                  has some of my favourite stories.

                      11.                                  have been good friends since school.

                      12.                                  has a good collection of clothes.





                            Every sentence has a subject and a predicate. The subject tells us who or what
                            the sentence is about. The predicate tells us something about the subject.



                  Kinds of Subjects

                  A sentence can have one or more subjects. Let us study more about them.

                  1.  A subject can be a single word—a noun or a pronoun. For example,

                     y   Jayashree laughed.
                     y   Denny barked.
