                      1                       Collocations











             Collocation is a familiar grouping of words, especially words that habitually appear
             together and thereby convey a meaning by association.

             There are different types of collocations.

             We will now take up seven main types of collocations with examples.

             1.  Adverb + Adjective
                 For example,

                 y   Hurting animals is a really horrible thing to do.
                 y   We entered a richly decorated room.
                 y   This is a fully furnished flat.
             2.  Adjective + Noun

                 For example,
                 y   The doctor ordered him to do regular exercise.
                 y   The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage.

                 y   He was writhing on the ground in acute/sharp pain.
             3.  Noun + Noun
                 For example,

                 y   I want two loaves of bread please.
                 y   The ceasefire agreement came into effect at 11 a.m.
                 y   I’d like to buy two bars of soap, please.
             4.  Noun + Verb

                 For example,

                 y   The dog started to bark when it heard the lion roaring.
                 y   Snow was falling as our plane took off.
                 y   The bomb went off when he started the car engine.
             5.  Verb + Noun
                 For example,

                 y   The thief was jailed for committing a theft.
                 y   I always try to do my homework in the morning, after making my bed.
                 y   He has been asked to give an opinion on the matter.
