4                              Suffixes











             We can add a letter or a set of letters to some words to make new words. Such groups
             of letters are called suffixes. Let us learn to make suffixes.

             1.  The suffix less

                     Noun       name         love        luck         mercy        penny       tooth

                  Adjective nameless         loveless    luckless     merciless penniless toothless


             2.  The suffix ful

                     Noun       plenty       harm         beauty      peace        joy       teaspoon

                  Adjective plentiful        harmful      beautiful   peaceful     joyful    teaspoonful


             3.  The suffix ing


                     Verb       try          drown        uplift       graze        prey        bite

                  Adjective trying           drowning uplifting        grazing      preying     biting


             4.  The suffix ed

                     Verb        learn       dread        amaze        type        hate        torpedo

                   Adjective     learned     dreaded      amazed       typed       hated       torpedoed


             5.  The suffix able

                     Verb      read         like         distinguish         inflame         service


                  Adjective readable        likeable     distinguishable     inflammable     serviceable


             6.  The suffix ible
