ii. Compound → Simple
To convert a compound sentence into a simple one, we try to reverse the above
process, i.e., we try to convert one of the finite verbs in the compound sentence
into a non-finite verb. For example,
(In each of the following examples, only the finite verb of the transformed simple
sentence has been italicised.)
• The rat saw the cheese lying out in the open and immediately ran towards it.
(compound)
• The rat, seeing the cheese lying out in the open, immediately ran towards it.
(simple)
• We eat, therefore we live. (compound)
• We eat to live. (simple)
• He neither drinks nor smokes these days. (compound)
• Apart from not drinking, he doesn’t smoke these days. (simple)
• The old lady lives alone, yet manages her affairs quite easily. (compound)
• Despite living alone, the old lady manages her affairs quite easily. (simple)
B. Transform the following compound sentences into simple sentences.
1. Not only is the cat but also the dog is responsible for the mess.
2. He plays chess and keeps his mind sharp.
3. They painted the fence, but forgot the gate.
4. Pay the fine, or face the consequences!
5. The dog yelped in pain for someone had stood on his tail.
6. Neither a borrower nor a lender be!
7. The sun rose, and the fog cleared.
8. He wasn’t up to it, yet he volunteered.
9. She knew fully well what she was doing, and she did it.
10. He had to go back home, for he had reached late.
