                       The sentence is the most important grouping of words because it expresses a
                       complete thought. Every sentence has a subject and a predicate.




             Basic Structure of a Sentence

             Every sentence has a subject, which is the person or the thing that the sentence is
             about, and a predicate, which gives us more information about the subject.


             •  A dirty dish lay on the floor.

                    (subject)       (predicate)
             •  The chocolate cake was delicious.

                    (subject)               (predicate)
             •  Her sister works at a restaurant.

                    (subject)       (predicate)

             •  The gentle giant hugged the puppy.
                    (subject)             (predicate)
