Time to speak
A debate is a way of exchanging ideas and opinions on a specific topic. It is generally
conducted between two groups, where one speaks for the topic and the other speaks against
the topic. Following points should be kept in mind while speaking on a topic:
1. Point of view should be crisp and precise.
2. A thorough research must be done on the topic, and there must be enough evidence to
support your opinion.
3. Statements must be justified with examples related to the evidence.
Following phrases may be used while debating:
• First of all, I would like to point out… • I strongly believe that…
• I would like to draw your attention… • I oppose…
• In my opinion… • I think/I don’t think that…
Work in two groups. Conduct a debate on the topic ‘Friendship and favours go side by
side’. One group has to speak in favour of the topic and the other against it.
