Time to listen
Listen to a folk tale from Vietnam about how the tiger got his stripes. Once done, read
the sentences and number them in the correct order.*
The tiger saved himself from the fire but the burnt ropes left black stripes on his coat.
A tiger was watching a farmer and his water buffalo.
The water buffalo replied that the human had wisdom.
He came back with more villagers and tried to set the tiger on fire.
The tiger asked the farmer to give him some wisdom.
The farmer tied the tiger to a tree.
The tiger asked the buffalo what made the human powerful.
Time to speak
We ask questions in a variety of situations. We use question words—why, who, how, where,
when, what, which—to ask questions.
The question words help us ask about
reason why?
people who?
way or manner how?
place or location where?
time and occasion when?
specific things what?
choice or alternative which?
Now, get into pairs. Suppose your partner is Half Chicken and you meet him on the
way. Ask different questions using the question words and your partner will give
suitable replies.
