About the Author
Hugh John Lofting (1886−1947) was an English-born American writer who created the classic children’s literature
character Doctor Dolittle. The Story of Dr Dolittle, the first of his series, appeared in 1920 and won instant success.
Doctor Dolittle was originally created to entertain Lofting’s children in letters that he sent to them from the front
during World War I. There have been a number of adaptations of the Doctor Dolittle stories in other media.
